Stay Safe: The 2 Updates You’re Forgetting - Cybersecurity Tips

When it comes to cybersecurity, small steps can make a big difference in protecting your personal information. Yet, many people overlook two simple but crucial actions: regularly updating their computers and ensuring apps and software stay up to date. These updates are more than just an inconvenience—they’re your first line of defense against hackers and malware. In this post, we’ll explain why these updates matter and how staying current can keep your devices secure and your data safe. Let’s dive in!

Update! Update! Update!

The single most important thing you can do to keep your devices secure is to keep them up to date. Regularly check for any updates and get them installed. Set a calendar reminder or something for a time when you are usually free and check all of them at once. Weekly is best but monthly will be good enough. I usually prefer weekly because even if I miss a week, I’m still good.

Most operating systems these days have the option to check and install updates automatically. Check your settings and make sure that it is turned on wherever possible.

Don’t Forget App and Software Updates

Don’t forget to check your apps and software for updates as well. On mobile devices the app stores can usually be set to update automatically. But on PCs sometimes software such as web browsers may need to be checked manually. The update option is usually under the Help menu in the About screen.

This includes Anti-virus and security software. Having an Anti-virus program installed won’t do you any good unless you keep it up to date. Check occasionally to make sure you are getting the latest updates.
